BRITISH SE-5A FIGHTER: The S.E.5 is a British biplane fighter aircraft in World War I designed by Henry P. Folland, J. Kenworthy and Major F.W. Goodden of the Royal Aircraft Factory in Famborough. On March 1917, the S.E.5 entered service with No.56 Squadron RFC. The squadron flew its first patrol with the S.E.5 on April 22. The more powerful S.E.5a replaced the S.E.5 in June. There were only 77 original S.E.5 aircraft built before production settled on the improved S.E.5a. A few S.E.5as were converted as two-seat trainers. The S.E.5a has a crew of 1. It has a maximum speed of 138 mph and a range of 300 miles. It has one synchronized 0.303 in forward-firing Vickers machine gun with Constantinesco interrupter gear. The primary users of the S.E. are the Royal Flying Corps, United States Army Air Corps, Royal Canadian Air Force and Polish Air Force.
