Bell X-5 History:
The Bell X-5 was the first aircraft capable of changing the sweep of its wings during flight, enabling it to fly at a wide range of speed. It was manufactured by Bell Aircraft Corporation and was designed Robert J. Woods.
There were two X-5s built and the first aircraft was completed in February 1951. On June 20 and December 10, 1951, the two X-5s made their first flights respectively. The X-5 had vicious spin characteristics from the aircraft's flawed aerodynamic layout, with a poorly positioned tail and vertical stabilizer, leading to an irrecoverable spin in some positions and it caused the destruction of the second aircraft and death of the Air Force test pilot. The Bell X-5 has a crew of 1. It has a maximum speed of 716 mph and a range of 750 mi.
The primary users of the Bell X-5 were the U.S. Air Force and NACA. The aircraft retired on December 1958.
