Northrop X-4 Bantam History: The first X-4 (serial number 46-676) was delivered to Muroc Air Force Base, California in November 1948. It underwent taxi tests. it made its first flight on december 15, 1948, with Northrop test pilot Charles Tucker at the controls. The first X-4 proved to be unreliable since it only made 10 flights. It was never flown again but it was used as spare parts for the second aircraft. The NACA (now NASA) instrumented the second X-4 to conduct short series of flights with the Airforce pilots. The initial NACA X-4 flights continued from the late 1950, focusing on the aircraft's pitch sensitivity. Since then, it began pitch oscillation of increasing severity. Inertial coupling and poor stability also became a major challenge in the years to come. The Northrop X-4 Bantam is a single piece,swept wing, semi-tailless airplane designed and built to investigate the configuration at transonic speeds. The X-4 was a small twin-jet having no horizontal tail surfaces. The hope of some aerodynamicists was to eliminate the horizontal tail to solve stability problems. The X-4 flew 82 research flights from 1950-1953. The X-4 retired in 1954 and ended its days as a pilot trainer.
