P-61 Black Widow History: The P-61 Black Widow was used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The Black Widow was an all metal, twin engine, twin bloom, monoplane night fighter and night intruder. It is said to be the first American and only Allied purpose built aircraft to serve as a radar equipped night fighter. The P-61 Black Widow featured three pilot, gunner and radar operator. It has four 20 mm Hispano M2 forward firing cannons, mounted in the lower fuselage and four browning M2.50 cal machine guns. The turret of the Black Widow was driven by the General Electric GE2CFR12A3 gyroscopic fire control computer. The main landing gear bays were located at the bottom of each nacelle, directly behind the engine. The main fuselage was centered on the aircraft’s centerline. The nose of P-61 housed an evolved form of the SCR-268 Signal Corps Radar, the Western Electric Company’s SCR-720A. Behind the radar was a crew compartment. The P-61 Black Widow was proved to be a very versatile and effective weapon against enemies. The P-61 originated from the battle of Britain. When the British community urgently needed a night fighter and since early radars were so heavy and British requirement was a night fighter that could stay airborne for a long time, only P-61 Black Widow will work. The 418th and 412st NFS adopted the P-61 Black Widow in mid of 1944 and in the CBI, the 426th and 427th NFS transitioned to the P-61 later that year.
